8 Family-Friendly Things Happening This Week

Bazaars, fairs, charity events and more
2020-11-03 14:00:00
The Halloween madness and its sugar-high are over, and that kind of sucks. But in true Shanghai fashion, the city's got a few things up its sleeves. Here's six things for you and the kids to do this week.

Thursday

Autumn Bazaar at Geneva

Nov 5, 11am-4pm @ Geneva

If you want to start getting those Christmas gifts in early Geneva's having an autumn bazaar selling Shanghai-made goodies. Not a bad way to blast through a Thursday evening with friends and family.

Jewelry Making Class

Nov 5, 7-9pm @ Craft'd

Instead of sending family overseas bought gifts for Christmas, you could always have your teen make something instead. Artsy folks over at Craft'd have a class this Thursday evening that teaches you how to make earrings and other jewelry bits using polymer clay. Costs 200rmb for materials, snacks and a drink.

Friday

Art for Hearts

Nov 6-7, 7-10pm & 10am-6pm @ Shanghai Centre

Art For Hearts has its third annual art sale where proceeds go to children in need of life-saving surgeries. Aside from paintings and whatnot, there will likely be a few Shanghai brands selling their wares for the cause plus some food, drink and snacks. Opening night is this Friday from 7-10pm when the majority of pieces get snapped up.

Shanghai Toy Show

Nov 6-8, 9am @ Shanghai World Expo Exhibition & Convention Center

toy show Shanghai
Are toys just for kids? Have they ever just been for kids? Through art, design, fashion, illustration and sculpture, this three-day exhibition wants to show us that not only are toys not just for kids, they're also becoming as popular as designer bags.

Clothing Drive

Nov 6-8, 3pm till late @ The Rooster

clothing drive Shanghai
Got a bag of unused clothes sitting in the kids' closet, or just in need of a good pre-Christmas clear out? The Rooster's hosting a clothing drive this weekend whereby you give up the goods and they treat the adults to a free pint of Vedett.

Saturday

Shanghai Maker Faire

Nov 7-8, 11am-7pm @ Tonglefang

It's techy, it's nerdy, it's gadget heaven — the Shanghai Maker Faire has finally landed. We're talking 50+ exhibits and installations covering everything you and the kids need to live out your geekiest desires: 3D printing, robotics, coding, experimentation, pottery and more. There will be eight DIY workshops teaching people to code, hack, and build robots. If you happen to see Arnie at the fair, run! Family tickets (entrance for four people) are 150rmb and can be booked via SmartTicket.

Sunday

11.11 Single's Day Market

Nov 8, noon-6pm @ On Air Space

11.11 is awesome for discounts but it's also bad for the environment: packaging, eek! So, the eco boys over at Boomi thought screw it let's run this offline. This year the Single's Day Market will have 25+ eco-friendly brands to scope out, food of the healthy variety, and a second-hand swap area for you to trade in unwanted clothes, toys, etc.

15th Annual Shanghai Chili Cook Off

Nov 8,11am-5pm @ Bubba's Food Co.

Family a fan of steaming bowls of chili? Then you probably ought to go to the Annual Shanghai Chili Cook Off. The competition between the independent teams, home chefs, and pro chefs gets so hot it's been cooking annually now for 15 consecutive years. Go round and sample each contender's bowl, then vote on your favorite. The one with the most votes will be awarded "People's Choice" and earn effective bragging rights to Best Pot of Chili in Shanghai. Oh, there will also be music, beer, and some sunshine — hopefully! Entrance is 50rmb and includes 1 beer + chili sampling.
