Beef&Liberty

A homegrown success story for tasty, premium style burgers, Beef & Liberty has now two locations around town dedicated to the burger arts. Their house style is beefsteak homage, with house-ground Tasmania beef, served on a custom baked white roll. Gourmet style. Sound elaborate and involved but arrives on the plate, simple, manageable, and really delicious. In addition to that menu offers just 7 variations of meat between buns, with straightforward names: "Hamburger, Cheese, Bacon Cheese, Felafel, Black Pepper, The Notorious P.I.G. (the pulled pork), The Little Pecker (the chicken burger)".

We want to say Beef & Liberty is underrated but its always pretty busy and they've got two of them. So, people are accurately rating it. Good job, "people". (They also have a pinball machine.)

The Deal: Buy one hamburger get one free, Mondays at Beef & Liberty from 3pm til 9.30pm. Each guest also needs to purchase a beverage. The cheaper of the two hamburgers will be complimentary. Available at Beef & Liberty Shanghai Centre and Pudong Kerry Center (the K.Wah Centre one has closed) Details here.

Al's Diner (Xinle Lu)

Originally opened as a premium ice cream shop called Gracie's, this little spot on the corner of Xinle and Fumin is a long running brunch favorite in the neighborhood — very decent pancakes on a menu that also offers a line of tasty sandos, patty melts, and Korean-style double-fried chicken.

But they also do burgers. It is a "diner" after all. Al's doesn't have the most extensive menu in this regard but it's a nice, inviting environment.

The Deal: Al's Diner burger does Buy 1 Get 1 Free on Mondays from 5pm. Popular go-tos are The Big Al, American cheese, etc. All burgers come with pickles, lettuce, tomato, secret sauce on a toasted sesame bun, served with French fries or salad. Details here.

Cotton's

Two locations of Cotton's — Xinhua Lu and Anting Lu — offer up two of the most popular patio destinations in town, in converted colonial houses. Great for after-work drinks, dates, and wine with friends in a beautiful leafy environments. They serve up a relaxed menu of continental food in a chill, inviting atmosphere. Always a dependable option in the city center.

The Deal: Every Tuesday, one Burger and 1 Asahi beer for 100rmb (original price of that combo is 158rmb). Available to Cotton's members only, but it's easy to join their free membership program. Details here

roma

Roma is probably not the first name you'd think of for a burger deal — it's a finely-wrought, quality-and-details-focused Italian casual dining restaurant that specializes in homemade pastas and handful of regional Italian specialities, and the like — but they do indeed host a worthy burger special that you should check out. Roma's burger deal is great if you're looking for something a little nicer in a Euro, chic-but-casual neighborhood restaurant. Good for people who order wine with their burger.

The Deal: Enjoy their juice burger (we tried it, it's great) with french fries and a glass of prosecco or a soft drink for only 98rmb. Available on Monday's only and exclusively through SmartShanghai (not available for purchase at the restaurant). Purchase the deal here.

Fat Cow

Shanghai is crazy for Fat Cow, especially on Monday's. If you don't book ahead, forget about it (unless you're the type of person who gets turned on by waiting). But what can we say? Their burger nights are a huge draw. Their burgers are a fun selection of big, egregious ‘Merican gourmet-style burgers served up with punny names: "Avocowdo Burger", "La Vache Epice Burger", "Mexican Moo-Chas Grass-ias Burger", hitting on ingredients and styles sourced from an international pallet. Flavors from Hawaii, Mexico, Korea, India, France, and more are represented in burger format.

Nice selection of grazings salads too, to assuage the guilt of ordering one of these massive burgers. Their original burger sauce is quite nice, ask for a side to dip your fries into.

The Deal: Every Monday from 5-10pm, buy one get one free burgers with the purchase of any drink at Fat Cow. Second BOGO burger must be of equal or lesser value; holidays not included. Burgers start from 63rmb. UPDATE: This deal is now valid at all three locations.

Beer & Space

Beer & Space burgers are GOOD. This is a seriously surprising find on this list. Their sous chef is from Canada, and he's been putting some real Canadian flare on these beefy bad boys. Our recommendation? Their burgers are decidedly on the medium side of the spectrum. So if you eat one, you'll be satisfied and won't' feel like you've eaten a whole cow. But they're forgiving enough that you can get two burgers for yourself and not feel too guilty (but definitely a little). Our recommendation? Definitely get the Crispy Maple Bacon Cheeseburger. It's stupid good. Comes with a real nice garlicky aioli, and a delicious bourbon barbeque sauce that's made with chocolate stout beer. And of course, the maple glazed bacon puts you in Canadian heaven. Bam! Go try this one out! And yea, the beer-battered onion rings are good too!

The Deal: Every Wednesday, Beer&Space is hosting Burgers Night from 6-8pm where you buy one burger and get another one free. Details here

Cages

The original Cages in Jing'an is still closed for the time being but the One East location is now open for all your sports entertainment and burger needs. In addition to just the one batting cage, they've got a slew of state fair-style sports arcade games — several variations of basketball games, skeetball, boxing, ping pong, frisbee, American football, and more. Great for parties, big groups of friends, and... of course, leaving parties. Cages puts a lot of effort into their menu and it really shows. They've got a huge selection of burgers and sliders, sandwiches, chicken wings, pastas, pizzas, and salads, along with a bunch of new stuff and little details — like the crazy bread, which is the upscale version of the kind you get at Little Ceasars ("pizza pizza"). Get the crazy bread.

The Deal: All day, every Monday, enjoy our classic Burger with French Fries, and a pint of Budweiser (500ml) or soft drink for only 50rmb. Currently only available at Cages (One East), the JIn'gan Cages is still closed. All details here.

The Smokehouse x The Camel

A sports bar and restaurant, the BBQ-heavy menu comes from Matty C, bringing lip-smacking, authentic Kansas City BBQ to downtown Xuhui. The bar and restaurant has huge LCD screens for sports watchers, and occasionally gets rented out for other events like Eurovision and sassy US Presidential Debates. Good place to book out entirely if you want to do a watch party of sorts. Friendly neighborhood bar vibes during the week, but it can get pretty packed and wild on Fridays and Saturdays. Burger style is classic smashmouth. We prefer the pure simplicity of the "Classic American" two beef patties with the basic fixings. But you can go elaborate with the "Carolina Smash" with coleslaw and an onion ring filled with pulled pork or the "BBQ'D Bourbon" with bacon, smoked cheddar, bourbon butter onions, and KC barbecue sauce.

The Deal: Every Wednesday from 5pm to 10pm, buy 1 get 1 free smash burgers including Burnt Ends Burger, Carolina Smash, BBQ's Bourbon Smash, and more starting from 78rmb. Details here.

Shanghai Brew House

A gastropub chain with enough craft-beeriness in it to avoid being a soulless bar chain, but not so much that they feel they can charge an arm and a leg for a pint. Most 500ml beers hover around 50rmb. The beer's a-okay, the fusion-y pub grub doesn't overstep its limits, the atmosphere is unpretentious and friendly. The one in Jing'an has a nice little terrace with a nice view of Jing'an Temple. Reliable option for a hearty meal and a beer.

The Deal: Buy 1 burger get 1 free on every Monday night at 5-10pm at Shanghai Brew House in all their branches. Burgers start from 68rmb. Details here.

The Battery New York Eatery

The Battery New York Eater, in Pudong's Kerry Parkside, is your casual New York-style eatery, serving classic, contemporary American and fusion food. The menu is expansive, encompassing everything from Korean ribs to Tex-Mex quesadillas and, of course, the classic American burger. It's on the ground floor of the Kerry Center in Pudong and also has a big courtyard for outdoor dining. Not a bad option for a burger in Pudong.

The Deal: They have a "buy one get one" burger deal on Mondays from 3pm to 10pm. they've got 4 types of burges including chicken and beef ones, ranging from 80rmb to 95rmb. Each guest must also order a beverage. Burgers come with fries. Details here.

Blue Frog

It's the Blue Frog. Not introduction needed. It's the original burger deal restaurant. A Shanghai success story burger chain, the Blue Frog invented the hamburger in Shanghai in like 1930 and have since expanded to locations all over the city, serving up a dependable list of burger offerings and a popular happy hour special. Simple yet effective. If you're looking for an unfussy, gourmet style burger option, there's probably a Blue Frog within walking distance of wherever you happen to be.

The Deal: Every Monday from 4pm, it's buy one get one free burgers with the purchase of any drink (Blue Frog staff doesn't seem to know the deal when we called to confirm and told us about another deals that's buy a burger and get a drink for free). Details here.

Must Grill

Formerly "Must Wine", Must Grill focuses on meats, burgers, and... still, red wine. Dark wood decor and a nice glassed-in patio area with heat lamps during the winter. It's a casual spot; good for a date, friends, or a bite with the coworkers. They have some unique burger options on the menu with toppings that include salsa, foie gras, fried goat cheese, chili peppers, and others. A lot of the places on this list are "artisinal", "upscale"-ish burgers, but Must Grill's burgers are even a little bit more so.

The Deal: Every Tuesday from 5.30 pm, buy one burger, get one free from a choice of 10 styles ranging from veggie to frenchie. Homemade buns and sauces with 180g of Australian Served with French fries. Details here.

Tap House

You'r heading to the Tap House for the beer on the convenience — and then a pretty decent burger deal on top. This place specializes in a good variety of craft beers and they've got 18 beers on tap, and a cider, and serve them in ways made for the beer aficionado: beer flights, snack pairings, and so on. Flatscreens show sport. Stools and high tables and some outside seating all year around. A couple locations around town serving as the local for neighborhood residents.

The Deal: Choose any burger on the menu and get a second burger for free every Monday. There are at least 10 burgers to choose from which include beef, pork, chicken, and vegetarian options. All burgers are served with fries. Details here.

Big Bamboo

The quintessential OG Shanghai sport bar, Big Bamboo has two locations in town, each serving a variety of pub fare rotating weekly food and drinks deals, as well as lots of sports on lots of televisions, bar games, and big Western food portions. Key point of interest is their own in house craft beer brand Beast of the East, which is one of the better ones in the city, and a solid option to wash the burger deal down with.

The Deal: All burgers get 25% off from 3pm till late every Tuesday. You can cash in on this deal at both Big Bamboo Jinqiao and Hongqiao. Details here.
