Kids & Family

The Pearl has been receiving mannnny requests for family-friendly shows and they are more than happy to oblige. They are pleased to create a series of shows on Sunday afternoons that fans of all ages are welcome to join as the Pearl believes it’s important for new generations to experience live entertainment. Along with the live entertainment, Chef Lung will be creating a special brunch menu featuring brunch staples like eggs benedict but also some of his specialties like Montreal smoked meat and poutine! The kitchen will open at 12:00 noon and the show will start at 1 pm. Free entry for kids 5 years old and under.

Live Music

Shanghai death metal outfit HOLOKASTRIA has been around since 2014, evolving their ferocious death metal passages with more bite, further exploring the depths of darkness with elements of doom, thrash, and black metal - becoming muddier and dirtier in the process (and all the better for it!). The band will be heading the road for a mini China tour - kicking off on their home turf at none other than Yuyintang - with support from sludgy doom metal outfit Conch.

The Pearl is throwing Red Stars and Stripes with the best of American rock. The Pearl’s house band Red Stars have planned a night of Imagine Dragons, Maroon 5, Kool & The Gang, and so much more. Doors open from 6pm, music begins at 8pm.

Yanchester - a glorious mashup of Manchester and Yangpu - two places that have birthed many young riotous acts - heads to VAS tonight for a killer showcase. Special guests include one of the more exciting new acts to emerge out of Beijing over the past year - ShallowEnd - who peddle tender soaring indie rock tropes with elements of math rock and post-rock. Joining them are Shanghai’s own shoegaze dreamscapers Pale Air, Britpop disciplines Burley Quay, and 1000 Failures, known for evoking some of the pop rock and emo scene’s best.

An indie rock extravaganza over at Yuyintang as a quartet of the scene’s fiercest contenders takes the stage including jangly indie rockers Fulcrum, who canvas across shoegaze, psych rock, and anthemic Britpop with conviction - straddling simmering dissonance, tight hooks, fuzz-laced guitars, and thick bass lines with ease. Joining them are emerging Nanjing shoegaze act Milk Guard, and Shanghai’s psych-pop act Weather King, two bands not afraid to skirt along the edge of oblivion both emotionally and musically. Last but not least, local indie rockers Clams Getaway, evoke 90s Britpop at its rowdiest and proudest.

Thrash metal fans unite! It’s time to indulge in the thrashing victory bells of the THRASHING CULT FEST! Violence, madness, and bone-crushing sounds are visceral in their potency and speed - some of the most extreme metal bands this side of Asia join forces over at Yuyintang Park. Special guests include two Tokyo acts - the ever-intense FASTKILL and the blackened ABIGAIl, one of the most internationally renowned extreme metal bands in the Japanese underground. Joining them are the infamous thrash metal outfit Explosicum from Nanchang, and the Beijing multi-national and ever-riotous B.B.Q (aka Bob Blockhead Quartet). Thrash for life!

Some of metal’s most daring and atmospheric offspring converges on VAS including Beijing post-black metal outfit, Bliss-Illusion, known for adding Chinese Buddhist scriptures into their songs, Guangzhou-based technical deathcore outfit Horror Of Pestilence - an assault on the senses that’s richly detailed in its choice of weaponry; and Shanghai’s own Urizen Society, known for fusing of black metal and symphonic metal that’s grand as can be - offering soliloquies before breaking out into a blood-curling scream.

Expect classic tunes from legends like Stevie Wonder, James Brown, and Earth, Wind & Fire, as well as modern gems from artists like Anderson. Paak, Kaytranada, and Disclosure.

ALTER. welcomes back the legend himself Tom Trago as the last stop of his Asian tour. Tom Trago – one of the leading lights of the Dutch electronic music underground, who defined the house and electronica sound of Amsterdam like few others. He is a globe-trotting DJ, producer, live performer and label owner who enjoys nothing more than championing both overlooked gems and fresh sounds from his own country. Tom Trago held residencies at renowned Amsterdam institutions Trouw and De School and name any prestigious festival or clubs worldwide – pretty sure he’s played there.

Fruity Grooves with the legendary DJ Shortkut spinning the decks for a night of world-class turntablism and eclectic beats. A master of the turntables and a world-renowned battle champion, Shortkut is set to deliver an unforgettable experience with his impeccable scratching skills and innovative beats. Fruity Groove will provide the heartbeat of the event, bringing together a lineup of vinyl virtuosos like Danzel, Gao Gao, Vertigob, and gkamkbns, who will take you on a sonic adventure across funk, soul, reggae, Afro, Latin, and more. This event is a tribute to the vinyl culture and the DJs’ shared passion for urban music and culture. Expect a vibrant atmosphere where the legacy of groove meets the innovation of the modern DJ scene.

The China debut of the up and coming Japanese-Jamaican Bass talent NASTHUG, hosted by Space Panda. In their words: "Her cute appearance contains unlimited explosive power, as the new generation of female idol of Tokyo club sense, she will bring the Japanese style party atmosphere to The Shanghai EDITION for this night". Friday at Celia this week invites Bog. A Romanian native who is currently based in Paris. He started his career in 2009 and quickly gained recognition for his unique musical vision. He met his mentor, the legendary John Digweed, at Burn Studio in Ibiza and signed to his Bedrock label. He also collaborated with Tim Engelhardt on the massive ‘No More Words’ for the Innervisions highly-anticipated annual compilation ‘Secret Weapons Part 9’. He has released music on Monaberry, Poker Flat, and TAU, and has featured on Watergate 25 and Bedrock’s XX 20:18. BOg’s music style is mainly electronic, with influences from house, techno, progressive, and deep genres. Support by local heros Chewie and Blinky.

Arts & Stage

"Also sprach Zarathustra" is the first concert of the 2024 music season of the Shanghai Philharmonic Orchestra, which will be performed at the Shanghai Oriental Art Center Concert Hall on March 1. This concert is planned by the art director Zhang Yi. The entire concert will open with the overture of Pfitzner's theatrical soundtrack "The Little Kekin of Helblingen", which is first-time performed in China. The second work will be performed by the outstanding world-class cello soloist Qin Liwei , collaborating with the orchestra to perform Bloch's Hebrew Rhapsody 'Solomon'. This year also marks the 160th anniversary of the birth of the German composer Richard Strauss. The orchestra will perform the classic symphonic work "Also sprach Zarathustra", which was created by Richard Strauss based on the masterpiece by Nietzsche.

This exhibition encompasses a curated collection of Elliott's photographic works spanning seven decades. Through his lens, he captures moments from everyday life, each piece infused with warmth, emotion, and a touch of humor. Featuring over 100 photographs, with the earliest dating back to 1949, the exhibition showcases Elliott's iconic black and white images alongside lesser-known works and some of his later color photographs from the latter part of his career.

Impulse Dance presents this contemporary dance theater consisting of 8 dancers on stage. By using physical expression, the show captures different whispers happening in nature and the city. Impulse Dance Company was newly established in 2020. The director is Wang Hao, a former dancer of the West Ballet Company, resident choreographer of the Shanghai Ballet, and a famous modern and contemporary Chinese ballet choreographer.

Tony-nominated Songshan Shaolin KungFu Show group will present this Chinese martial art show for kids and families that love Kung Fu. This is a performance event that integrates kung fu, dance, music, and drama from the perspective of kids. The show is 70 minutes long including a 10-minute interaction segment.

"Vincent and Me" is a new media choral concert jointly curated by the Netherlands Chamber Choir and the Italian audio-visual studio fuse*. Through the paintings of two iconic artists, Vincent van Gogh and Gustav Klimt, as well as the masterpieces of contemporary composers such as Saint-Saëns, Debussy, Mahler, and others, it applies painting algorithms and biometric data to connect the visual and sound, and the emotions of the artists and the audience, creating a full-sensory audio-visual experience that immerses the audience back to Europe in the late 19th century. The performance is centered around 13 works by composers of the same era as Van Gogh and Klimt: the works of Saint-Saëns, Debussy, Satie, Mahler, Strauss, Schoenberg, and others, creating a dialogue with the works of the two great artists and their historical backgrounds. In this performance, the audience is both a listener and a participant: the paintings become audible, and the music becomes visible. The show will be performed live by the Netherlands Chamber Choir, led by Peter Dijkstra, who has won the German Echo Klassik twice, the French Golden Diapason, and was nominated for Grammy Award. He will lead the choir, which has a history of more than 80 years and has recorded more than 75 albums.

Stepping Stones Shanghai English Teaching (SET) Program offers English lessons to under-served children in Shanghai, including migrant children. English is one of the three core subjects in the Chinese curriculum and it poses the most challenges to migrant and left behind children. Migrant children left their rural hometown to be with their parents who are making a living in Shanghai. See the flyer for more details about this program. Volunteer recruitment and training session will be held on March 3rd, 2024.
