This weekend, two major events are coming: Maker Faire, THE science fair for kids, is back on Yuanmingyuan Road; Rolling in the Park, a first-ever family music festival, will be held at a park right next to Disney.

And with the spooky season in town, let's not leave our kids behind. The Pearl is hosting a family Halloween party next Sunday afternoon, with family-friendly live music, puppet shows, and a whole lot of holiday-themed food and drinks.

For families with even younger children, the Hungry Caterpillar Show at Wanping Theater is worth checking out.

Maker Faire Shanghai 2023

The Maker Faire has always been a hugely popular event for families and "makers" in Shanghai. For those of you who've just arrived, here's a primer on the event. Originating in California in 2006, the Maker Faire is an immersive festival where folks can participate in interactive workshops and hands-on activities, with opportunities to use some really cool modern tech. From 3D printing and robotics to drones and woodworking, there's plenty of kid-friendly fun. This October, it’s returning to Yuanmingyuan Road, next to Beijing East Road. The previous 2021 event attracted more than 20,000 visitors, and this year's event promises to be even bigger. The 2023 edition will feature more science shows, entertainment, and a new food market. So, if you get hungry, there's plenty to eat. Kids under a height of 1.2 meters get in for free, but please note that pets are not allowed during this event.

Rolling In The Park is Shanghai's large-scale family music festival. It's so large, that it serves as a benchmark for similar events all over China. This event caters to all families, with children aged 1-18, the festival showcases the finest in global integrated arts and cultural elements in music, exhibitions, and theater. This creates a diverse platform for both appreciating and displaying children's art from an international perspective. Rolling In The Park masterfully blends energetic holiday adventures with exceptional camping experiences, offering a distinctive holiday destination. The festival features world-renowned performances across various genres, including pop, jazz, disco, funk, hip-hop, rock and roll, ballads, and hosts family parties.

On October 4, the first day of Disney's Halloween celebrations, all the Mickey Avenue residents, including Mickey and Pals, will don their 2023 Halloween costumes for a special fashion show. Shanghai Disneyland will host its magical annual Halloween Carnival from October 4 to November 5. Bring your family and friends to create a special Halloween memories in Shanghai for 2023.

Get in on some Halloween family fun at the Pearl's Spooktacular Party. It's that time of the year for costumes, candy, and a whole lot of family-friendly Halloween enjoyment. On Sunday, Oct 29 at The Pearl, there will be live music, dance-alongs for kids, puppet storytelling led by Derek Lawrence Kemle, and a special Halloween-themed food menu to delight both kids and grown-ups. Dress up and join us for a howling good time suitable for all family members! Doors and kitchen open at 12pm, with the show starting at 1pm.

Created by Jonathan Rockefeller, the critically acclaimed production of The Very Hungry Caterpillar Show features a menagerie of 75 lovable puppets. It faithfully adapts four of Eric Carle's stories: The Artist Who Painted a Blue Horse, Mister Seahorse, The Very Lonely Firefly, and — of course — the star of the show, The Very Hungry Caterpillar. There will be two shows, one in the afternoon and one in the evening, performed in English with Chinese subtitles. The show's duration is 45 minutes. Children and adult tickets are priced the same.
